As per the Global Health Security Index 2021, India ranks 66th in medical infrastructure and facilities. Another shocking fact shows that India spends only 1.5% of its GDP towards healthcare- being the lowest in the world. Even though the constitution of India obliges “right to health” for everyone, most of the people in India still lack the privilege to exercise this right. The most affected sections of the society are the ones residing in rural and undeveloped areas. Although government schemes have proved beneficial in providing healthcare facilities in rural areas, there are still many areas which face a shortfall.
In a report of 2016, data shows that nearly 1.6 million Indians died just because of poor quality of healthcare. However, the problem doesn’t end here. This cobweb is weaved by negligence, lack of affordability and lack of awareness. Superstitions and taboos add salt to the broth. Lack of awareness towards medical procedures, medical facilities and even how to avail them is something which takes lives as well. Rural areas are deprived of medical awareness. In cases of healthcare emergencies, most people in such areas have no clue of the steps to be taken, while others prefer to be treated by unskilled and uncertified medical representatives.
While the ongoing healthcare schemes aim to improve the quality of life of people, even in rural areas, they still behave as a vector rather than being a foundation. The number of such schemes is still not enough to meet the current healthcare demands. 75% of people don’t even have healthcare access, let alone healthcare quality. At Pramadaya India Foundation, we aim to provide this healthcare access to people through our medical support. In recent years, our teams all over India have lended their healthcare support to help those in need. During COVID-19 pandemic, Pramadaya India Foundation delivered medical oxygen, free ration, sanitizers, medicines and other medical essentials in the entire Northern belt of India. Our volunteers and members worked round the clock to ensure that those in need were not neglected during the pandemic. Our healthcare support aims to offer medical necessities, basic medical help, healthcare facilities to those who cannot afford it. So far, our foundation has brought smiles to more than 1000+ families through our healthcare support.
According to data provided by the Government Of India, 2011- the number of people over the age of 60 has nearly tripled over the past 50 years. An important characteristic of this data is that approximately 8% of this population lives in villages and areas of poor socio-economic status (SES). All this data shows that the majority of this population has little to no healthcare access while others are unable to afford it. Geriatric healthcare is another aspect where India falls behind. The only way this could be solved is by establishing dedicated geriatric healthcare centres with basic medical facilities.
Over the past 2 years, Pramadaya India Foundation has helped the elderlies to get basic healthcare facilities and provide them with a better quality of life. Our efforts have proved useful in providing them with a sense of well being and reliability. Pramadaya is always on the forefront whenever healthcare support is needed. Our foundation has been sound in fulfilling the geriatric needs especially in poor, rural and low socioeconomic status areas. This has not only helped them meet their basic medical needs but also improved their overall health.
Majority of these challenges pose us with one question. How do we solve this? As a social community, we all seek a reliable and permanent solution for the shortcomings on our healthcare front. On one end we have unmatched private sector hospitals with international medical facilities while on the other end the basic healthcare centres are gasping for breath. This gap needs to be bridged and the only way it can be done is by increasing the number of healthcare centres with improved medical facilities.
To compare with, America ranked 1st in the Global Health Security Index 2021. One of the cardinal reasons being that America has much more advanced medical facilities than India. Although India has approximately 38,000 hospitals, which in contrast to America’s 6,093, is a huge number, still India ranked 66th because of its vast population. The number of PHC, CHC and SHD are still not enough to cater to every single Indian’s health.
Recently, India faced the wrath of COVID-19 pandemic which crushed our healthcare systems. It brought out two important aspects of the health sector-One that providing healthcare facilities to all still remains a challenge. The other that the existing healthcare foundation and functions are still to be bolstered. Even the number of healthcare professionals including doctors, nurses, paramedics, technicians etc. fall way short of what the current need is.
There are many approaches which must be taken to overcome these challenges. Mobile healthcare delivery systems is one such initiative which can prove useful in spreading awareness and educating rural dwellers. Pramadaya India Foundation has been dedicated to organise various workshops and programmes to help spread healthcare awareness and education. Our main aim has been towards overcoming any healthcare challenge which results in an increased mortality rate especially in rural and backward unprivileged areas.
Another approach is to focus on the quality of medical services being offered. There are still many hospitals which lack even the basic facilities and first aid. Such hospitals are mere concrete buildings. It should be ensured that these healthcare centres are not just “built” but they function to their full potential and quality. Quality of healthcare has to be managed in such a way that it comes with affordability for the marginalised communities. Since 2021, Pramadaya India Foundation has worked to identify the root causes of healthcare challenges. We regularly work at individual, society and community levels to curate novel solutions and establish quality healthcare. Our helping hands have stretched to improve child nutrition and health, maternal health, support and treatment of communicable diseases.
The ambit of healthcare is not just limited to hospitals. It includes water, sanitation, proper waste disposal, hand hygiene and energy resources as well. All these aspects must be dependable, safe and practical. As a community and even at an individual level the least we can do is to spread awareness and contribute whatever we can. Distributing extra unused medicines to weaker sections of the society is one such example.
Improving healthcare requires finances whether at individual or community levels. Decentralisation of finances in recent times has improved healthcare. However, decentralising human resource management, enhancing budget allocation and increasing community participation are the need of the hour. As per data, in 2017 there were 1.34 doctors per 1,000 patients. This ratio has insignificantly increased. If we as a nation aim to improve our healthcare then this ratio must be increased.
2019 was the year where Indian medical professionals faced the most distrust and violence. This violence escalated during the times of COVID-19 pandemic. Another radical challenge which our healthcare systems face is lack of trust by the masses. The root cause of this is attributed to sheer ignorance and rudimentary thinking. To deal with this, developing a deep rooted level of trust has to be established which can be done by inducting proper medical knowledge. Pramadaya India Foundation is ambitious in not only supporting the ‘marginalised’ but also resounding their minds with healthcare knowledge. Over the past years, we have achieved to bring smiles to more than 500 families.
Blood Donation Camps
Pramadaya India Foundation has been very active in organising blood donation camps in underdeveloped and backward areas. These areas face the most healthcare crisis, and finding a healthy and hygienic blood supply becomes tumultuous. Majority of the rural areas don’t have sufficient blood banks to provide the correct blood group. Those which have, face shortage. Pramadaya has tried to solve this scarcity by setting up blood donation camps which bolsters the rural blood banks. Not only this, it also connects different communities and spreads awareness regarding health and healthcare issues.
An estimated data reveals that nearly 12,000 individuals die in India everyday due to lack of availability of good quality blood. Our sole aim of organising such camps is to overcome this shortage and ascertain that the blood being available is of good and pure quality. Pramadaya aims to organise more such blood donation camps all over India. As promising as it may sound, Pramadaya India Foundation has helped hundreds of individuals to get blood during an emergency.
COVID Healthcare Support
In the year 2020, when India was hit by the first wave of COVID-19, Pramadaya India Foundation provided healthcare support by various means. These included providing emergency services, medical facilities and food distribution.
Pramadaya India Foundation stepped forward and provided the COVID-19 affected families with food, medicines, hospital beds, free doctor consultations, shelter, oxygen cylinders, PPE kits, masks, sanitizers and financial support.
We also launched a website www.covidadda.com which acted as an enormous database of COVID related resources. Pramadaya helped people find emergency ambulance services, blood & plasma donors, and free tele-medicine. We aided the people in availing the benefits of free vaccination drives and free video consultation and counselling by doctors.
At a time when people had no clue about availing the help and support, Pramadaya extended its support through this website to maximise its reach all over India.
We covered major metropolitan cities including Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar etc.
Pramadaya India Foundation aims to augment its outreach to each and every corner of the country to provide healthcare support and humanitarian relief to the impoverished, backward and underprivileged sections o
